The Frankfurt Marathon has taken place every year in Frankfurt am Main since its inception in 1981. It is the longest-established city marathon in Germany and in terms of the number of finishers, Germany's second-largest with an average of nearly 25,000 participants per year. Furthermore it is the second fastest marathon in the world.
Frankfurt’s number one sports event
The Frankfurt Marathon is rated as one of the six most important marathons and has IAAF Gold Label status. The event attracts world record-setting athletes and offers exposure and engagement with both participants and fans. The race starts from the centre of Frankfurt, leading runners through the city, onto the district of Sachsenhausen and the residential district of Hochst. Runners are then led back along the Mainzer Landstrasse through the city centre towards the trade fair tower and the "red carpet" finish at the Festhalle. There is also a 5K Pretzel Run and a mini-marathon for children. With an average of 450,000 spectators per year, the whole city is on the streets.
